Deepwater & Emerging Technologies Study Group Meeting

Date:

Wednesday, April 22, 2009

Time: 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM
Program Topic:

New Drilling Approaches / What’s the Future?”

Presenters and Presentation Detail:

1. John Kozicz (Transocean, Technology Manager)

Presenting – “Managed Pressure Drilling – An Offshore Drilling Contractors Perspective

While many of the drilling techniques and methods now referred to as MPD are not new their application offshore has been limited to date. This limited application is not necessarily a reflection of the suitability of the techniques to the offshore drilling environment but rather results from a lack of suitable equipment to enable readily deployable MPD solutions offshore. This presentation will highlight some recent offshore MPD applications; describe some of the implementation issues and suggest opportunities to facilitate broader application of these drilling techniques offshore.

John has over 30 years industry experience beginning on land rigs in western Canada. He joined Sedco Forex in 1987 working offshore California, GOM, North Sea in various rig and Management positions including early production project and operations manager for the BP Machar and ConocoPhillips Banff, Phased development projects. Subsequently, moving to Business Development based in Paris participating in the development of the Sedco Express Class semi-submersible drilling rigs. In his present role as Transocean’s Technology Manager he is responsible for non standard drilling operations such as Surface BOP and Managed Pressure drilling.

2. Ken Smith (Chevron, Manager Dual Gradient Drilling Project Implementation)  Presenting – “Dual Gradient Drilling Utilizing the SubSea MudLift Drilling Pumping Technology”

Dual Gradient Drilling is a specialized form of managed pressure drilling that is intended to significantly reduce the challenges and costs of deepwater drilling.  The technology effectively removes the impact of water depth on the well design, and consequently, will reduce the number of casings required to TD the well.  There have been many approaches pursued over the last 12 or 13 years, yet there remains no commercially available dual gradient drilling technology.  This presentation will discuss the technology developed by the SubSea MudLift Drilling JIP, the effort that successfully drilled the world's first dual gradient well.

Last year, Ken Smith went to work for Chevron as Manager, Dual Gradient Drilling Implementation of dual gradient drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.  He has 30 years of experience, most of which has been with Conoco and ConocoPhillips.  And although he's worked in various drilling engineering, rig supervision and management capacities around the world, his passion is technology.  He is an avid champion of managed pressure drilling in general, and in dual gradient drilling in particular.  From 1996 through 2001, he led the SubSea MudLift Drilling Joint Industry Project, where his team developed the Hydril SubSea MudLift pumping system and all of the various drilling and well control procedures required to safely perform dual gradient drilling.  All of their work was proven out in the successful drilling of the world's first dual gradient well.  A graduate of Texas A&M, Ken is married and has two Longhorn daughters.

3. Paul Fredericks (At Balance)

Presenting – “Extended Development of Deepwater Depleted Fields through Prolonged Use of Automated Pressure Drilling and Optimized Drilling Fluids”

In their search for a drilling solution to manage narrow pressure windows in deepwater depleted fields in the GOM an operator implemented two new technologies, automated pressure control and micronized drilling fluids. These complementary technologies proved to be an effective solution to reduce drilling costs by reducing mud weight, eliminating losses, and preserving wellbore stability. They also enabled the operator to continue his development program by successfully drilling previously unreachable producing targets.

Paul Fredericks is Director of Marketing for At Balance located in Houston, Texas. Paul has over 28 years of international and domestic oil field experience ranging from open and cased hole wireline operations, measurement and logging while drilling operations, product line management, and marketing, and most recently managed pressure drilling marketing. With At Balance since 2005, Paul directs all activities related to marketing, advertising, and communications for the company and its products and services. He graduated from the University of Mississippi with degrees in Mathematics, Physics and Geology.
