1. Ove Braadland, Fluid Advisor – Equinor
Presenting - "Fluid Engineer(ing), Today and Tomorrow..."
The presentation will give an overview on how far we in Equinor have come with regards to automatic measurements of mudweight and rheology. Since 2018, we have required these key parameters as a part of the standard service delivered to us. At the moment, all installations have this equipment installed, and we will demonstrate how the data is used now and may be used in the future. We will also give an overview of how this equipment already has changed the day-to-day work for the fluid engineer and other roles. Together with automatic mixing, handling and treatment, it will be an integer part in our plan for autonomous operations in the future.
Ove has 27 years of experience in the Oil & Gas industry. He started working in Dowell Schlumberger's fluids laboratory in Norway back in 1995 after finishing his petroleum engineering studies. Later, in 1998, he joined Baroid as lab manager. Soon after, he combined the lab managerial role with working offshore as a fluid engineer on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. In the 2000's he held both technical and operational positions in Baroid/Halliburton, before he took on the role as Technical Manager in 2006. In 2009, Ove took on the role as Regional Technical Manager in the same company with Norway, Europe and Sub Sahara Africa as his work region. Ove joined Equinor's global Fluids group in 2013 and have held the Drilling and Completion Fluids Leading Advisor role there from 2016-2022. Currently he is the Leading Engineer in Equinor's global Fluids group with expertise in drilling -and completion fluids as well as drilling waste handling offshore and onshore.
2. Matt Offenbacher, Director of Marketing & Technology – AES Drilling Fluids
Presenting – “The Onshore Mud Engineer of the Future: Today's Vision”
Most onshore well programs are centered on perfect execution – over and over again – while keeping costs as low as possible. This presentation will provide a vision of an automated, data-driven mud engineer in the context of land-based drilling cost drivers and demands.
Matt Offenbacher serves as the Director of Marketing and Technology for AES Drilling Fluids. He has worked in the oilfield since 2005 working onshore and offshore in the United States and abroad.
3. Mario Bouguetta, Technology Program Manager – M-I SWACO
Presenting – “Digitizing Drilling Fluids: Demystifying the Mud Man Job”
Digitizing drilling fluids is realized by automating mud testing hardware and developing knowledge-based advisory software. This will bring a greater transparency in decision making during routine operation and/or unscheduled events to a Domain often thought of as being ambiguous. Only through this endeavor, the demystification & unboxing of the mud man/mud woman profession can then become an attainable goal.
Years of downturns have caused voluntary and involuntary acceleration of the long announced big crew change. Another recent trend sees more attractive industries make recruitment of potential young talent difficult. Add a global pandemic and it has become clear that the digitization of the last frontier of drilling technologies (Drilling Fluids) is a matter of survival. The current generation of Mud Engineers has both the duty and privilege to lead this change.
Mario Bouguetta is a Technology Program Manager based in Houston, Texas. Mario holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering and started his oilfield career with M-I SWACO in 2003 as a mud engineer trainee. Since then, Mario held positions in delivery of mud services to rigsite operations, field service laboratories and technical service engineering support.
